A Small Donor Committee is a political fund that allows for larger direct contributions to state level candidates than a traditional PAC. Funds are raised from supporter contributions with a maximum donation of $50 per election cycle. Colorado Sierra Club’s Small Donor Committee can contribute up to $2,675 for the primary election and $2,675 for the general election with a total contribution amount of $5,350 per election cycle for State Legislative races. Governor and statewide races limits are higher. Limits may be reviewed on the Secretary of State’s website.
Small Donor Committees allow regular folks to pool their money together to support candidates that support the issues they care about - it’s a way for us to compete with money from corporations and major donors who regularly buy influence in our political system. We know that candidates depend on financial contributions to run competitive campaigns. Small Donor Committee contributions allow us to impact critical races and build influence with elected officials who will be voting on pro-environment issues in Colorado.
Money raised will go directly to endorsed candidates running for office in Colorado at the state level - State Legislature, Governor, Secretary of State, etc. No money will go to federal or local candidates.
Small Donor Committee funds will be used to strategically target the most critical races, improving our effectiveness in maintaining or growing a pro-environment majority at the State Legislature. We don’t have unlimited resources, so targeting the most vulnerable and competitive champions will be key to winning the most important races this fall. The Colorado Sierra Club’s leadership team, in coordination with the Chapter Political Committee and local groups, will ultimately determine which candidates to support.
Individuals can contribute up to $50 per election cycle; however, any amount will make a difference!
No, political contributions are not tax deductible.
As part of the Colorado Chapter Political Committee, the Fundraising Subcommittee has been tasked with raising money for Colorado Sierra Club’s political program to help build the Chapter’s political power at the state level. More power and better relationships potentially means more influence in passing pro-environment policies at the State Legislature. It is a new effort this year with a goal of raising $5k.
